Lexington and the rest of Central Kentucky is preparing for the 2010 World Equestrian Games.
In just a little over 400 days, an estimated 600,000 spectators, dignitaries and hundreds of horses will flock to the bluegrass for a two week period. It’s an exciting time for Kentucky but it also requires a great deal of planning, especially when it comes to security.
Lexington Police Chief Ronnie Bastin says his force will be responsible for traffic flow in and out of the horse park, hotel security for guests and dignitaries and the biggest responsibility, downtown Lexington for the various events and festivals at night. “The majority of the drain on man power for us is going to be in the evenings” Bastin said. But for a force of just over 550 sworn personnel, you don’t have to do the math to know Lexington Police will be grossly outnumbered come next fall…
