Beatson Claims Top Honours at NZ Jumping Champs
Maurice Beatson and My Gollywog entered the history books when they won the New Zealand 1.40-1.60m showjumping championship title at the national jumping championships in Christchurch today. It was the combination’s third consecutive win in the event, the national senior championship.
Gunning for the win, the double defending champion was determined throughout the three days of competition and going into the final rounds he knew there was no room for error, with the Olympic combination of Katie McVean and Dunstan Forest 11 fewer than 2 penalties behind him.
Over the “track of the show” Beatson and My Gollywog took a clean sweep of the field with the only clear in the first round over the World Cup-standard course set by international course designer Kevin Hansen of the Hawkes Bay.
…”We have had placings and seconds more than once but with Gollywog I haven’t won the Horse of the Year – this might be the year, we will see,” Beatson said. He also has an eye on the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky next year…
